Sea of Cortez
The most important natural assets in La Paz are the Sea of Cortez and its islands, coastlines and beaches. In 2005 UNESCO designated 244 islands, islets and coastal areas within the Sea of Cortez a World Heritage property. According to UNESCO, the Sea of Cortez contains 39% of the world’s marine mammal’s species and a third of the world’s marine cetacean’s species. Of all these islands, islets and coastal areas, Espiritu Santo in the Bay of La Paz is considered the crown jewel for its natural beauty and rich marine life. Espiritu Santo, which is only a 40 minute boat ride from Camaron Beach, was designated a national park in 2007.
