Sea of Cortez

The most important natural assets in La Paz are the Sea of Cortez and its islands, coastlines and beaches. In 2005 UNESCO designated 244 islands, islets and coastal areas within the Sea of Cortez a World Heritage property. According to UNESCO, the Sea of Cortez contains 39% of the world’s marine mammal’s species and a third of the world’s marine cetacean’s species. Of all these islands, islets and coastal areas, Espiritu Santo in the Bay of La Paz is considered the crown jewel for its natural beauty and rich marine life. Espiritu Santo, which is only a 40 minute boat ride from Camaron Beach, was designated a national park in 2007.

San Jose Island

A much less visited but no less appealing attraction is San Jose Island, which is about a two and a half hour drive (by a 4 x 4 vehicle) north of Camaron Beach; small boats, or pangas, starting off from the downtown La Paz do not make this lengthy excursion. Some of the activities on and around this island include hiking, kayaking, observing whales and dolphins, snorkeling with sea lions, scuba diving and fishing. The waters around San Jose Island in particular are excellent for kayaking and paddleboarding through the extensive mangrove forests.
